Militants Threaten Ancient Sites in Iraq and Syria

This Monday, September 15, 2014 photo shows the head of a winged bull made out of limestone restored and displayed at the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad. Now much of that archaeological wealth is under the control of extremists from the Islamic State group. They have already destroyed some of that heritage in their zealotry to uproot what they see as heresy. Other priceless artifacts they have hacked off palace walls or dug out of still unexcavated sites to sell on the international black market in a potentially significant source of revenue.
