The Week in Pictures: September 27 – October 4, 2014. Part 5/6

An undated handout picture made available by the European Space Agency (ESA) on October 2, 2014 shows ESA's Sentinel-1 passing over the Italian peninsula, in space. Sentinel-1, a Synthetic Aperture Radar in C-band, carries an advanced radar instrument to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of continuous imagery of Earth's surface. As a constellation of two satellites orbiting 180 degrees apart, the mission images scan the entire Earth every six days. The mission benefits of numerous services that range from monitoring the Arctic sea-ice extent, a routine sea-ice mapping, a surveillance of the marine environment, including oil-spill monitoring and ship detection for maritime security, monitoring land-surface for motion risks, mapping of forests, water and soil management, and to support humanitarian aid mappings in crisis situations.
