Hamadrya baboons rest inside an enclosure at the Giza zoo in Cairo on December 10, 2014. Khedive Ismail, the ruler of Egypt from 1863-1879, built the zoo and planned the opening to coincide with the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869 but was not able to do so in time. On March 1, 1891, the zoo was officially opened for the public covering an area of 80 acres, and in the mid twentieth century it was considered one of the best zoos in the world.
