The ascent was held to commemorate the first race to the first ascent of the Matterhorn, also known as Mount Cervin. Zermatt opn 4 July celebrated 150 years since the first ascent of the Matterhorn, when British climber Edward Whymper reached the peak of the Matterhorn (4,478 metres above sea level) together with his rope team on 14 July 1865.
