The Day in Photos – September 17, 2015

A photograph made available 17 September 2015 shows Khoi rock art depicting European colonists shooting at animals on the walls of a cave on Groenfontein farm in the Koue Bokkeveld around two hundred and fifty kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa, 16 September 2015. The Khoi often mistakenly referred to as San or Bushmen are the indigenous people of Southern Africa. Their rock paintings form a critical historical record. Drawn here between three hundred to five hundred years ago on Sandstone rock they were often metaphorical and symbolic depicting non human form and giving insight into their spiritual world. The Koue Bokkeveld mountains which literally translated from Afrikaans means Cold Buck Shrubland comprises the Cedarberg sandstone which has intriguing patterns of erosion. Groenfontein farm in the Koue Bokkeveld mountains is in the process of preserving and protecting Khoi rock art as well as creating unique opportunities for visitors to view and enjoy these culturally rich artworks.
