The Day in Photos – January 29, 2016

A picture made available on 28 January 2016 of Buddhist monk statues on sale dressed in warm, woolly orange knitted caps, in a shopping center in Bangkok, Thailand, 27 January 2016. At least fourteen people have died in Thailand from a cold snap that has plagued the tropical country since 25 January, that forced some provincial authorities to close schools. In northern Nan province, classes at some schools located in mountainous areas were suspended until today, when temperatures rose again to more normal levels, as a precautionary measure. In Nan, which typically has hot and dry winters with temperatures hovering near 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), temperatures fell below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) 27 January. The unusual temperatures across North, South and even Southeast Asia, killing at least 91 people and which left many countries the coldest that they have been in decades, have been attributed to a cold wave coming from China.
