A giant flightless bird known as Genyornis newtoni (R) is surprised on her nest by a 1 ton, predatory lizard named Megalania prisca in Australia roughly 50,000 thousand years ago, in this illustration courtesy of Peter Trusler, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Scientists said on 29 January, 2016 that burn patterns detected on Genyornis eggshell fragments indicate that the humans who first arrived to prehistoric Australia roughly 50,000 years ago gathered and cooked the big bird's eggs, playing havoc with its reproductive success and possibly contributing to its extinction.
