The Day in Photos – February 21, 2016

An archive picture shows French General Joseph Joffre (2ndR) congratulating and awarding medals to soldiers, who fought in the Battle of Verdun, in Verdun, France, in March 1916. A Viscount in the Armoured Cavalry Branch of the French Army left behind a collection of hundreds of glass plates taken during World War One (WWI). The images, by an unknown photographer, show the daily life of soldiers in the trenches, destruction of towns and military leaders. Sunday February 21, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Verdun, fought from February 21 to December 18, 1916. It was one of the largest battles of the First World War on the Western Front between German and French armies. (Photo by Reuters/Collection Odette Carrez)
