The Day in Photos – April 1, 2016

This picture taken on March 8, 2016 shows a worker walking in a tunnel under construction along the current extension of the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) subway “Blue Line” into Bangkok's historic district of Chinatown. The Blue Line is the MRT's only line currently in operation, running from the central Hua Lamphong train station to the north of Bangkok and was opened in 2004 as Bangkok's second public transit system. The MRT serves hundreds of thousands of passengers each day, allowing them to escape the city's famously-chaotic traffic, and currently has 18 operational stations along 20 kilometers of underground route. Since 2011, two extensions of the Blue Line are under construction which will make it a loop line around the centre of the Thai capital. Its extension into Chinatown and further into the old city comprising of the Grand Palace and the city's most famous temples and tourist attractions is set to redefine Bangkok's urbanism, helping the reconnection of the historic Chao Phraya river meander where the city was first developed to the more modern eastern districts.
