A Look at Life in Japan

Lotteries originated in Japan in the 1600s. They were banned and resurrected several times until being banned entirely in 1842. After more than a hundred years of absence, the Japanese love for gambling could no longer be restrained and lotteries were finally revived in 1945. Takara-kuji lotteries were used to rebuild the country and help stave off rapidly escalating inflation. (Photo by Yoshikazu Tsuno/AFP Photo)
