Drought conditions afflicting millions of people in Southeast Asia might soon begin to ease off, after Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the El Nino effect over the region has ended. The announcement, posted recently on the BOM's website, explained that surface temperatures across the tropical Pacific Ocean have cooled to neutral levels over the last two weeks. It also noted that atmospheric indicators like trade winds, cloudiness near the Date Line, and the Southern Oscillation Index have returned to neutral levels. The 2015-2016 El Nino effect, which causes unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, has been partly blamed for severe droughts and heat waves across South and Southeast Asian countries, resulting in water shortages, drying rivers and crop failures.
