The Day in Photos – August 3, 2016

Ceremonies commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising in front at the Mound of the Warsaw Uprising in Warsaw, Poland, 01 August 2016. The Warsaw Uprising broke out on 01 August 1944 as the biggest resistance operation in Nazi-occupied Europe. Initially intended to last several days, it continued for over two months before being suppressed by the Germans. The uprising claimed the lives of 18,000 insurgents and around 180,000 civilians. After the failure of the uprising, the Nazis expelled the remaining inhabitants from the city and methodically blew it up, destroying it almost completely. (Photo by Jakub Kaminski/EPA)
