Bei Bei Celebrates First Birthday

Zoo officials set out a birthday cake for the Giant panda cub as the Zoo celebrates the first birthday of Bei Bei at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC on August 20, 2016. The zoo invited the public to the celebration which included a Chinese Zhuazhou, a traditional ceremony, where several symbolic objects are placed in front of the baby or in this case, the panda. The object that the panda chooses foretells something about his or her future. Bei Bei had three banners with painted symbols placed in his yard. He or his mother Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) will chose one. The birthday festivities also included frozen birthday treats for all three however keepers couldn't entice Bei Bei outside to eat his cake. His mother however, thoroughly enjoyed it. The “cake” is made of frozen, diluted fruit juices, fruit bits, some capped sweet potato and leaf-eater biscuits.
