The Day in Photos – September 4, 2016

A photo taken on April 14, 2016 shows a statue of Mother Teresa, the nun who spent most of her life caring for the sick and the poor in India, placed in Qafe Thane, near the Macedonian border. When Pope Francis canonises Mother Teresa on September 4, two Balkan countries will be celebrating the sainthood of a woman they both fiercely claim as their own. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in multi-cultural Skopje – then part of the Ottoman Empire and now capital of the Republic of Macedonia – Mother Teresa had an ethnic Albanian mother whose family came from Kosovo.
