Peace advocates light candles to symbolize mourning over cases of extra-judicial killings and the halt in peace talks between the Philippine government and communist rebels, at a mini-park in Quezon City, east of Manila, Philippines 22 February 2017. Seminarians, nuns, priests and peace advocates gathered to pray for victims in extra-judicial killings, many of which are related to the government's war on illegal drugs, and to pray for the resumption of peace talks between government and rebels. In its Annual Report for 2016 to 2017, Amnesty International states that in the Philippines “The government launched a campaign to crackdown on drugs in which over 6,000 people were killed. Human rights defenders and journalists were also targeted and killed by unidentified gunmen and armed militia. The use of unnecessary and excessive force by police continued”.
