A Look at Life in India

A farmer herds a flock of domesticated ducks towards his rice paddy near Alleppey in south-west India. The ducks will be fattened for market on fallen grains. The farmers leave their ducks in the paddy fields after harvest to eat the leftover grains, and later sell the eggs and meat in the local markets. The Kerala backwaters are a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900km of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) in southern India.
