“Dog Carrying Day”

On Saturday, September 2, 2017, local Chinese villagers gathered to celebrate a folk festival parade known as “Dog carrying Day” in Jiaobang village, Gedong Town, Jianhe county, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Guizhou province. The annual event dates back generations and marks how a dog once saved the village’s first settlers from thirst by leading them to water. Water shortages are common in the region due to porous rocks in the landscape which absorb water. The throne is supposed to be a sign of affection and respect but some animal rights campaigners have described the ritual as cruel. (Photo by Imaginechina/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
