“Our sun”. Runner up: Solar Limb Prominence and Sunspot by Eric Toops (USA) A striking image of a searing solar limb prominence and sunspot on the surface of our star, taken during the spring of 2016. Using Lunt H-alpha filters in a custom-made telescope the photographer was able to bring out the details of the solar activity using high magnification. Several photos were stacked to stabilize the image and the “seeing conditions” (the blurriness of the Earth’s atmosphere).
