One of the many different groups of natives in New Guinea is the “Saltwater” tribe, so-called because in lives at the beach or in houses built on stilts in the water off the shore. They live chiefly on fruit gathered from their gardens by the women and on fish caught by the men on the coral reefs. These photos were made in the Hood Point village on the south coast of New Guinea through the courtesy of Rev. Harold James Edward Short, missionary, who is mentor to the 800 natives.
