Seventy-five percent of the houses were damaged in the Cambridgeshire market town of Soham which shook like an earthquake, on June 2, when a ammunition-carrying train wagon exploded. The train had arrived at the station, when the fireman saw the nearest wagon on fire. Jumping down he detached the wagon from the rest of the train and with the driver attempted to get it away from the station. The driver, Benjamin Gimbert, and fireman, James Nightall, both died in the blast. Between 200 and 300 other people are believed to have been injured.
