China’s Abandoned “Ghost Village”

This picture taken on June 1, 2018 shows abandoned village houses covered with overgrown vegetation in Houtouwan on Shengshan island, China' s eastern Zhejiang province. Houtouwan was a thriving fishing community of sturdy brick homes that climb up the steeply hilled island of Shenghshan, but is now abandoned, with entire houses completely overgrown as if vacuum- sealed in a lush layer of green. Only a handful now live in the isolated outpost, which lies east of Shanghai and was once home to more than 2,000 fishermen. The only thing halting the village from being completely swallowed up by vegetation are the crowds of tourists drawn to its other-worldly landscapes. Houtouwan was established in 1950 and prospered over the decades on the Yellow Sea's plentiful riches. But its tiny harbour finally proved too small for larger vessels needed to sustain fishing, and the ships were diverted to larger ports instead. These amazing pictures show what was left behind...
