A Look at Life in Japan

A Japanese child on top of a traditional wooden float during the Gion Festival in Kyoto, Japan, 15 July 2018. The annual Gion Festival is one of the most famous festivals in Japan. It starts every year on 15 July and continues through to the end of the month. During the festival the streets of Kyoto are lined with night stalls selling food, traditional Japanese sweets and games for children. The parade of giant traditional wooden floats, decorated with tapestries inspired by old European, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Japanese motifs, held on 17 July and 24 July are the highlight of the festival. The festival has been held annually since the year 970. (Photo by Everett Kennedy Brown/EPA/EFE)
