Afghan women sort saffron flowers in Herat, Afghanistan, 11 November 2018. According to reports the saffron industry in the province of Herat has hired more than 5,000 farmers with 40 percent of them being women, to cultivate about 1,000 acres of land (about four square kilometers). The World Bank states that saffron is a lucrative alternative to poppy cultivation while international buyers around the world have been attracted by its good quality including Europe, US, China and India.
