A white stork (Ciconia ciconia) eats in the free flight aviary in the bison enclosure a day-old chick thrown to him for food in Lower Saxony, Springe on February 5, 2019. Currently in Germany alone, 45 million male chicks are killed every year in the breeding of laying hens because they do not lay eggs and do not prepare as much meat as broiler chickens. The so-called day-old chicks are also used as animal feed. (Photo by Julian Stratenschulte/dpa)
