A red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) perching on a tree as it scouts for prey as a Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula) lands nearby, in Orleans, Massachusetts, USA, 25 May 2018. According to scientists, since the 1970s the number of birds in North America (United States and Canada) has declined by three billion, almost 30 percent of its entire bird population. The findings, which raise fears that familiar species once so abundant in the 1900s could go extinct, point to ecosystems in disarray because of habitat loss and other factors yet to be specified, researchers added.
