A family enjoy a picnic next to the Angel of the North on September 19, 2020 in Gateshead, United Kingdom. Since easing its first nationwide lockdown in May, England has imposed localised lockdown rules on towns across the Midlands and North, in what the prime minister termed a "whac-a-mole" approach to battling Covid-19 flare-ups. Last weekend, almost two million people in Newcastle and surrounding areas were banned from meeting other households, and pubs and restaurants were told to close by 10pm. As the UK government implements similar rules across England, a tour through the towns with local lockdowns shows how Britons are coping with the government's lurching response to the pandemic.
