Five fighting Coast Guardsmen, who participated in the initial landing on Manus Island in the Admiralties, display Japanese trophies picked up during the swift occupation of that South Pacific stronghold. Their souvenirs include a Japanese knee mortar, flags, light machine guns, rifles, and a Japanese 25 caliber “woodpecker” on May 24, 1944. Left to right, the Coast Guardsmen are: Eric S. Wessborg, Jr., chief boatswain's mate, of Richland, Mich.; William Knight, chief quartermaster, of Oakland, Calif.; Ralph E. DeChevrieux, gunner's mate second class, of Long Beach, Calif.; John E. Schoewe, coxswain, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and Harold A. Mayer, pharmacist's mate first class, of Yankton, S.D. (Photo by AP Photo)
