HMS Prince of Wales, a King George V class 35,000 tonne battleship is launched in front of vast crowds, by Princess Mary, The Princess Royal, unseen, on the River Mersey at Birkenhead, England, on May 3, 1939. 40,000 people cheered as she slipped into the water after a faultless launch. She is to be the world’s fastest battleship, with a speed of over 30 knots. Her horse power and speed are confidential and no figures are being issued.
