A Look at Life in Yemen

A Yemeni craftsman weaves a traditional men's fabric (known as maawaz) at a workshop in the port city of Hodeidah, Yemen, 09 February 2022 (issued 21 February 2022). Maawaz weaving is a famous traditional Yemeni craft which is still used to product men's traditional fabric in the Arab country. At least two craftsmen work for over 15 hours to weave manually a maawaz with harmonious decorations and colors, using a wooden loom and colorful threads. Maawaz is a traditional Yemeni kind of wrap-around-one-piece fabric whose width is about one meter to cover the body of a man from the hips to the ankles or slightly higher. It has been worn by Yemeni men for generations, either wrapped around itself or kept in place by a belt tight. This woven garment is one of the most popular costumes in the coastal Yemeni regions which have hotter weather most months of the year, especially in the provinces of Hodeidah, Taiz, Aden and Hadramout, since it is very comfortable and practical. The price of a maawaz ranges between 10,000 Yemeni rial (15 euro) for the low-quality and 65,000 rial (Approximately 100 euro) for the high quality one. (Photo by Yahya Arhab/EPA/EFE)
