A Look at Life in Africa

Sandi Makama (L), 40, does pull-ups while others join exercises in the early morning hours at the iKasi Gym in the Township of Alexandra, Johannesburg, South Africa, 16 September 2022. The gym was originally part of owner Tumi Masite's house, but it has now expanded into the front garden. The gym is situated only some 100 meters from the house the late Nelson Mandela used to live in. It caters to the local community, which has a 50 percent unemployment rate, and households with an average income of 1,950 US dollar per year. By emphasizing a holistic approach to bodybuilding, the gym offers opportunities for both mental and physical improvement, with trainers stressing the importance of discipline and providing opportunities to develop job skills.
