Local residents receive humanitarian aid in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine, 24 January 2023. Despite Ukrainian authorities requesting residents to evacuate from the frontline territories, some 8,000 of around 71,000 people living in the area have refused to leave their homes.There is no working infrastructure left - no electricity, heating, water or gas, and due to the ever-present risk of Russian shelling, people mostly spend their time in shelters or the basements of their buildings.
