Sumela Monastery is illuminated with light during the winter season in Trabzon, Turkiye on January 24, 2023. The monastery, which is included in UNESCO's temporary list of World Heritage sites, was reopened for religious practice on Aug. 15, 2010, with permission from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, following an 88-year hiatus. The Greek-Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built by carving the rocks as a nestling in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1.200 meters facing the Altindere valley of Karadag.
