Wind turbines are seen in the distance as an RAF Typhoon fighter jet is refuelled in-flight over the North Sea, from a Voyager aircraft flying on a 43% blend of sustainable fuel on April 17, 2023 in flight – Region EMEA. The RAF have been experimenting with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) since the first RAF Voyager flight fuelled by 100% SAF in 2022. Current regulations permit a maximum of a 50:50 blend of sustainable aviation fuel and traditional fossil fuels. As the fuel is currently two to three times more expensive than the traditional option, the RAF hopes that by demonstrating it's belief in more environmentally-friendly fuel, the uptake will increase, subsequently driving the price down.
