The broken head of gargoyle is suspended by straps before being reattached on the 12th anniversary of the 2011 earthquake that damaged the central church on August 23, 2023 in Washington, DC. The 5.8 earthquake extensively damaged the landmark cathedral, which stands at the highest point in the nation's capital. The gargoyle, nicknamed "Mr. D. Capitated," was broken off of the cathedral when another piece of Indiana limestone fell from a higher point on the cathedral during the earthquake. The $26 million repair project is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in the next 5 years. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
