Hundreds of pieces of dyed cloth are spread out across a field at Batik Village in Narayanganj, Bangladesh on September 3, 2023 for drying which looks like a Kingdom of Colors. Workers use hats for protection from the scorching heat because they have to constantly turn the colorful fabrics so that they dry perfectly in the sunlight. Beautifully embellished colorful cloths are created using the Indonesian technique called “Batik”. Parts of the design are blocked out by applying hot wax over them, then a dye is applied on top and the parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original color. About 1,500 pieces of cloth are laid to dry here every day. The process usually takes two hours, with each set of 350 pieces at a time to dry in temperatures that can reach over 36 degrees Celsius. The colorful cloths which sell for less than $3 (3 USD) are arranged on patches of grass to dry out completely as it is cheaper and more sustainable to dry them out in sunlight.
