Humans and Animals

Pigeon fancier Anatoliy Seliverstov, 67, feeds pigeons inside his dovecote in Moscow, Russia on August 1, 2023. Pigeon keeping was once widespread in the Soviet Union and a dovecote could be found in almost every Moscow courtyard. However, the urban landscape of the Russian capital changed a lot since then, pigeon houses decreased in number as breeders, mostly elderly people, face pressure from the authorities with land price being extremely high in Moscow. Still the difficulties do not weaken the resolve of Anatoliy Seliverstov, Vitaliy Yazykov, Yuriy Shmelev and other like-minded pigeon fanciers, who retain their much-loved hobby through life.
