A “mariscadora” (shellfish picker) checks the catch in her rake as she collects clams and cockles in the Noia estuary, northwestern Spain, overnight on December 19, 2022. “Mariscadoras”, mostly women, pick clams and cockles out of the sand banks of Galicia region, in north-western Spain. In the past, this wasnt considered a job and there were no employment rights. The situation started to change in the 1990s when mariscadoras joined fishermens guilds and were recognised as workers of the seafood sector. Nowadays, shellfish pickers rights are protected through an active national association, representing over 30,000 women in Spain. (Photo by Miguel Riopa/AFP Photo)
