A Look at Life in Afghanistan

Taliban security officials stand guard during a ceremony to welcome the return of the last two Afghan Guantanamo Bay prisoners at Kabul airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, 12 February 2024. The last two Afghan detainees at the U.S.-run Guantanamo prison have been freed and returned to Kabul, marking the end of the release process for all detainees associated with the Taliban, according to the state-run Bakhtar news agency. After serving at least 14 years in U.S. custody at the Guantánamo Bay detention center, the two Afghan prisoners were moved to the Gulf kingdom of Oman in 2017, where they were placed under house arrest and were not allowed to leave the country for the following seven years. These prisoners were among the large number of Afghans arrested by the U.S. military following the invasion of coalition forces in Afghanistan in 2001 on charges of cooperation with the al-Qaeda terror network.
