The ceremonial fool,James Chatwin, delivers a speech during the Smoking the Fool, as he starts the Haxey Hood, an ancient tradition dating back to the 14th Century in the village of Haxey in North Lincolnshire on Friday, January 6, 2023. Teams representing pubs from two local villages, Haxey and Westwoodside, compete to win the hood – a leather tube – for their pub landlord. The hood is thrown into the crowd and swayed forward towards the pubs – which are known as the goals – without being kicked or thrown. The winning pub displays the hood until the next year. The game dates back to the 14th century when Lady De Mowbray dropped her hood and the locals chased after it. (Photo by Danny Lawson/PA Wire)
