A swan swims in the Sava river's Cukaricki meander covered in algae in Belgrade, Serbia, 02 September 2024. The Cukaricki meander's waters are a mix of backwaters, river water, and wastewater, which, combined with poor circulation and high temperatures, have turned the area into a settling basin for pollutants. This has led to the overgrowth of algae, creating a “green carpet” effect, which is common in rivers during hot, dry summers due to increased nutrient levels and reduced oxygen.
