Palestinian children walk past destroyed buildings as they head to class in the Khan Younis camp, southern Gaza Strip, 12 September 2024. Palestinian teacher Israa Abu Mustafa (not pictured) set up a makeshift classroom in a tent built on the rubble of her old house. According to a statement released by the Palestinian Ministry of Education, more than 650,000 students in the Gaza Strip are being deprived of their right to education for the second academic year in a row. At least 84 percent of schools in the Gaza Strip ‘require full reconstruction or significant rehabilitation before schooling can resume’, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported in September 2024. More than 41,000 Palestinians and over 1,400 Israelis have been killed, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), since Hamas militants launched an attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip on 07 October 2023, and the Israeli operations in Gaza and the West Bank which followed it.
