Two Italian climate activists from the Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) group were given a suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay nearly 30,000 in damages for glueing themselves to the base of Laocoon statue in the Vatican museum last year. Ultima Generazione – Last Generation is an Italian non-violent civil disobedience campaign born in 2021 within the Extinction Rebellion movement and now independent. Ultima Generazione demands the reopening of disused coal plants and cancel the project of new drilling for the research and extraction of natural gas, and to increase solar and wind energy by at least 20GW this year, to create thousands of new jobs in renewable energy.
