Brown fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus), which are among the largest seal species with their brown fur and length of more than 2 meters, are seen in Cape Town, legislative capital of South Africa, on October 22, 2024. The outbreak of rabies in Cape fur seals living on the southern and southwestern coasts of Africa is the first known outbreak of rabies among marine mammals. According to a report published by the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in July, a total of 17 cases were detected on the coastline between Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay cities as of the end of July, and it was stated that this outbreak was the first rabies outbreak seen among marine mammals worldwide.
