Tons of dead fish float on the waters of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, beside the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on March 13, 2013. Rio de Janeiro officials are assuring fans that the lagoon that will be used for Olympic rowing events in 2016 is “normally picturesque”, but it sure doesn’t look that way now. The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon was a sea of dead fish earlier this week when algae choked off the lagoon’s oxygen supply, killing 80 tons of yellowtail, catfish, tilapia and sea bass (RIP delicious fish). The algae problem was due to heavy rains which flooded the area with rotting algae. It took municipal officials 48 hours to clear out the dead fish; they’ve had experience before as this problem happens occasionally due to weather or pollution.
