A Look at Life in Africa

Euphrasie Kabuo (C) and two other farmers women from the village are returning from the fields in Kididiwe, North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on December 16, 2024. Cocoa, the main economic resource in the DRC's Beni territory, is fuelling the violence in this northern part of North Kivu province, where there are no minerals. For several years, farmers have been the targets of looting and massacres committed by the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) rebels, who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and sell the stolen goods in neighbouring countries. At the end of 2021, Uganda, one of the main cocoa producers on the continent, sent its troops to the region to work alongside the Congolese army against the ADF, an operation that raises questions about Kampala's ambitions for the sector.
