Demonstrators rallied in Manhattan, New York City on March 10, 2024, demanding Tibet's independence from China. The Tibetan Uprising Day marks the day in 1959 when thousands of Tibetans in Tibet surrounded the palace of the current and 14th Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual Buddhist leader of Tibetans worldwide. The Tibetans surrounded the palace in 1959 to protect the Dalai Lama due to fears of a Chinese government plot to abduct him. On March 17, 1959, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee from Tibet to India to escape the threat of the Chinese government. Since 1959, the Dalai Lama has been living in exile in Dharamshala in northern India. The Chinese communist chairman, Mao Zedong, annexed Tibet in 1950 after a military invasion. Annually on Tibetan Uprising Day, demonstrators globally hold rallies demanding human rights and independence for Tibet, which has been under Chinese rule for more than 70 years.
