A cai luong act is performed as part of the “Kieu Nguyet Nga” show, Vietnam's traditional opera, inside the living-room theater of an aging apartment block on July 26, 2025, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In 2018, Leon Quang Le directed Song Lang, a film that captured the golden age of “cai luong” and celebrated the art form's centennial. Today, he brings that spirit back to life with Ganh Hat Thien Ly, the fictional troupe from his film, reimagined in real life. Every week, Leon transforms his 40m2 apartment into a stage: folding chairs, a handful of guests, and actors performing just inches away. The shows, offered free of charge, draw 30 to 50 people each time, many of them seeing this traditional art form for the very first time. (Photo by Thanh Hue/Getty Images)
