A Turkish Angora is seen in Ankara, Turkiye on August 06, 2025, as International Cat Day, launched by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2002 and celebrated annually on August 8, raises awareness about cat protection through various events. Worldwide, efforts continue to protect endangered wild cat species and maintain genetic purity in domestic breeds through controlled breeding programs. Among protected species is Turkiye's iconic Ankara (Turkish Angora) cat, known for its long, shiny fur and distinctive eye colors. The Ankara Cat Protection, Survival and Promotion Center at Ankara University Veterinary Faculty houses these cats in safe conditions, breeds them through careful pairing, and helps them find new homes.
