A migratory bird perches on a dead tree in a deforested patch in Mida Creek, near Watamu, on August 4, 2025. Along the shores of Marereni and Mida Creek in Kenya, local communities are bringing once-declining mangrove forests back to life with their own hands, supported by COBEC and the nonprofit Seatrees. Through a biodiversity credit program, global contributions help fund the effort, while on the ground, women's groups and local youth grow, plant, and protect the trees. Together, their work has already restored millions of mangroves, reviving fish stocks and biodiversity, shielding the coastline, and turning care for the environment into a source of pride and income.
