A new born critically endangered European hamster is seen in their enclosure at the Wroclaw Zoo in Wroclaw, Poland on August 28, 2025. Wroclaw Zoo, celebrates the first success of conservation breeding of the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus), once a common sight in agricultural landscapes, has seen a dramatic decline in numbers due to habitat loss, changing agricultural practices, and poor dietary conditions. The hamsters, named Bryg, Bosman, Brzask, and two females named Burza and Bryza, were born on July 8 in the southwestern city of Wroclaw. Conservationists warn that without immediate action the species could disappear entirely from its Eurasian range within the next 25 years. (Photo by Omar Marques/Anadolu via Getty Images)
